Plain answers to common PDF questions: whiting out, redacting, editing without Acrobat and making scans editable, with the free methods compared honestly.
How to white out a PDF on a Mac
On a Mac you can white out a PDF for free in Preview: draw a rectangle, fill it with white and remove its border. That hides the text, but it does not delete it. If you want the words actually gone, or the page is not pure white, delete the text itself instead. Both routes are below.
Does white out remove text from a PDF?
Usually not. A white box drawn over a PDF hides the words from view, but in almost every PDF tool the original text is still in the file underneath, where it can be searched, selected and copied. That is fine for fixing a typo. It is not fine for a bank number, a name or anything you are legally meant to withhold.
How to redact a PDF for free
Redacting means removing content from a PDF so it cannot be recovered, not just covering it. Adobe's redaction tool is in the paid Acrobat Pro, but you do not need it. Below are the free routes, what each one actually does to your file, and a quick test to run before you send anything.
How to edit a PDF on Windows without Acrobat
Windows already has two ways to change a PDF: Microsoft Edge can add text, drawings and highlights on top of it, and Word can convert it into a document you can rewrite. Neither edits the existing text in place. For that you need a real PDF editor, and you can use one in your browser without installing Acrobat.
How to make a scanned PDF editable
A scanned PDF is a photograph of a page, so there is no text in it to edit, only pixels shaped like letters. To make it editable you run OCR (optical character recognition), which reads those shapes and turns them into real text. Here is how to tell whether your PDF is a scan, how to OCR it for free, and what to check afterwards.
